New Editions Printed
During the late 1960's and early 1970's Mildred Nungester Wolfe created over 40 strikingly original woodcut and linocut prints. Over the years, the small editions were sold and most of the prints have not been reprinted until now.
Thanks to a Mississippi Arts Commission 2002 Individual Artist Fellowship awarded to Mildred Wolfe and to the many hours of work and skills of printmaker Wendy Eddleman, Wolfe Studio is once again able to exhibit new editions printed from the original blocks.
Limited quantities of prints signed by Mildred Nungester Wolfe are available. Please contct the studio for further information.

| "Autumn Sweet Gum" |
In preparation for printing, choosing papers and colors, Wendy Eddleman was able to refer to several artists proofs Mildred saved from the original printings, as well as adding her own creativity. In this edition of "Autumn Sweet Gum" three different colors of ink were carefully blended by Wendy Eddleman to achieve a quality reminiscent of a sweet gum tree in the fall.
| The plate (a linoleum block in this case) is rolled with red ink from a small rubber brayer. Three small brayers are used to carry different colors of ink from the inking slab to the block.
A sheet of paper (which has already been printed with one color of ink) is being placed onto the registration pegs in preparation for printing from the second block. This is the block that was prepared with the three blended colors in the previous step.
Most of Mildred Wolfe’s relief prints contain several blocks. The “Autumn Sweet Gum” is printed from 3 separate blocks. Each sheet of paper for each multicolor edition is printed first with one color, in this case, the gold background.
After this color dries, the second component of the image (the multicolored leaves of the sweet gum) is printed over the first color. When this second printing dries, the sheet will be printed with a third block, completing the image.
Each sheet of paper is carefully fitted onto the registration pegs and pressed onto the inked block underneath. The block was previously fitted against the squared wood frame on the peg board. This system provides precise registration of each layer of ink on the sheet.
Once the paper is in place over the inked block, the back of the sheet is carefully rubbed. This requires a good deal of pressure in most instances, and an overall sensitivity to the texture of the block underneath.
| Drying prints awaiting printing of the final block. Each of these prints has already been printed twice. At least one day must be allowed between each printing step.

Pressing transparent Japanese paper onto the final inked block for “Autumn Sweet Gum”. Here, a handmade wooden block is being used for rubbing the back of the paper.
Each edition is printed in a limited number which are selected, signed, numbered, and dated by the artist.
The print Mildred Wolfe is signing in this photo is “Bay St. Louis”.
